Spike speaks for supersonic flight
The US Senate is discussing lifting the 43-year ban on supersonic flight over land in the country. The move has been welcomed by the companies developing supersonic aircraft, including Spike, Boom, Aerion and Boeing, but has been strongly opposed by environmental agencies.
Vik Kachoria, President and CEO of Spike Aerospace, has responded, attempting to allay fears and open discussion. He said: “I believe it is completely unacceptable to advance technology or transportation at the detriment of the environment or the community. That is simply irresponsible.”
He explained that Spike Aerospace is designing an advanced supersonic jet (Spike S-512) that promises to minimise emissions, maximise fuel efficiency and economy, and reduce noise around airport zones. The team is working with environmental groups, engine manufacturers, airports and the regulatory bodies to assess potential impact – both positive and negative.
He concluded: “Our hope is that before environmental groups lobby the Senate to ban supersonic flight, they seek to understand more about what Spike Aerospace and our competitors are doing to minimise the impact. Before banning supersonic flight, lets talk?”
